Power, water, wastewater, fuel and fiber on a data center site: availability, corridors, yards and the civil work that connects them.
The problem this page addresses
A data center is defined by its utilities. Whether a site is viable is largely a question of what power, water and wastewater capacity can be delivered to it, when, and along which routes — and the civil site engineering is what turns those answers into a buildable layout.
Availability is a site-selection question before it is a design question. Substation capacity, transmission proximity, water supply and wastewater treatment capacity are established with the serving utilities early, because they decide whether the site can support the program at all.
Corridors are committed early and are hard to move. Duct banks, water mains, force mains, fuel lines and fiber need protected, dedicated corridors that the grading, drainage and building layout are then designed around.
Yards and pads are civil work. Generator yards, transformer and switchgear pads, fuel tank sites, utility vaults and maintenance access are sited, graded and drained by the civil engineer, in coordination with the disciplines that design the equipment.
What RSP Engineers does on these sites
RSP's scope is the civil site engineering:
- Utility availability and capacity coordination with the serving power, water and wastewater providers.
- Utility corridor planning — routing, separation, easements and protection of the corridors crossing the site.
- Water distribution, sanitary sewer and force main design for the site, and coordination of groundwater conditions with the drainage and foundation design.
- Siting, grading and drainage of generator yards, transformer and equipment pads, fuel tank sites and utility vaults.
- Utility permitting support and coordination of utility construction and commissioning on the civil side.
Scope boundaries
RSP Engineers performs the civil site engineering described above and also provides mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering through its own licensed staff. Where a project uses both, the interfaces between building systems and site infrastructure are designed together. Structural engineering and the other project disciplines deliver their own scopes, and how a completed facility performs — its energy use, the redundancy of its systems, its availability in service — depends on the owner's requirements, the equipment selected, the serving utilities, the construction and how the facility is operated. It is not determined by any single discipline's design.
