RSP Engineers provides mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering through its own licensed staff. MEP design sits alongside our civil and site engineering work, so building systems and site infrastructure are developed together rather than reconciled late.
Where MEP meets civil and site engineering
Most coordination problems on a project happen where building systems meet site infrastructure. Because RSP performs both, those interfaces are designed as one problem: where the building’s water and sanitary connections meet the site’s utility network and the serving utility’s mains; where the electrical service enters the site, and how that routing coexists with drainage, easements and access; where roof and building drainage discharges into the site stormwater system; and where mechanical equipment locations affect grading, screening, access and maintenance routes.
What MEP engineering covers
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering is the design of the building systems that make a facility habitable and operable.

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning design, ventilation and exhaust, equipment selection and layout, and the coordination of mechanical spaces with the architecture.

Power distribution design, lighting and lighting controls, panel and feeder layout, grounding, and the service connection to the incoming utility supply.

Domestic water distribution, sanitary drainage and venting, storm drainage within the building, and connections to the site utilities that serve them.
What RSP delivers, and what others deliver
Clear scope boundaries prevent gaps between disciplines. RSP performs mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering, and civil and site engineering; our other published services are listed on the Services page. Delivered by other project participants: architecture; the owner’s operational requirements, standards and equipment decisions; the serving utilities’ capacity, connection terms and timelines; construction means and methods; and commissioning and ongoing operation.
Coordination, not substitution. Civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering are separate disciplines with separate deliverables and separate professional responsibility. RSP coordinates its MEP and civil work with the owner, the architect, the structural engineer, the utilities, the contractor and the other participants on a project. Coordination does not transfer any discipline’s responsibility to RSP, or RSP’s to anyone else.
On performance. How a completed facility performs, its energy use, the redundancy of its systems and its availability in service, depends on the owner’s requirements, the equipment selected, the serving utilities, the construction and how the facility is operated. It is not determined by any single discipline’s design.
Licensure
RSP performs MEP engineering through its own licensed staff. Professional engineering licensure is granted by individual state boards and is discipline-specific and jurisdiction-specific.
